camera Nikon D200, Nikon D600, Nikon D800, Nikon z6

My interest in photography comes a long way, buying my first camera in 1986, a Canon AE1 Program with which I learned photography from the New York Institute of Photography, finishing in 1988. Then in 1990 I went to The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale where I graduated in 1993 on Commercial Photography, using everything from 35mm, Medium Format and Large 4x5 View Cameras. My passion for my craft is creating the scene, studio lighting, location lighting, taking the time to learn more and more every day. Photography is always evolving and one needs to evolve with it and embrace the changes. It’s a wonderful thing!

camera Panasonic Lumix DC-GH5

Derek began his professional photography career as a headshot/portrait photographer in his mid-twenties in Miami for actor and models. Wanting to add other genres, he began reading photography magazines and books (no internet in those days) to learn more. He realized that if he was able to understand and conquer lighting technique there was no type of photography he could not do. He continued studying, attending workshops and taking online classes once the internet was popular. He is completely self-taught. He studied not only the physics an techniques of photography and lighting, but also became an expert in the post-production process of picture editing (It was a lot better than smelling like ammonia from developing pictures in a darkroom). With time, training and experience, he became quite adept in other areas of photography: architecture, food, lifestyle, nature, products, portraits, hotels & resorts, hospitality and even video. He is living proof that once lighting is mastered, one he can shoot anything. He loves photography and never gets tired or bored of shooting and learning even though he’s been been behind the camera for over 30 years.

How did you get started with photography

I got started in photography when my dad purchased his first big professional Nikon (film at the time) I was fascinated by all the things it could do. So that's when I started shooting at everything I could, from rocks with nice lighting to every animal in the zoo. Fast forward to college, when I have some FAFSA money left over, I did the best purchase I could have done, bought me a DSLR camera, and haven't stop shooting since.

What do you love about your job?

I love capturing images, making them one of a kind. There would never be the same moment in time again unless you measure everything and control the environment. I also love interacting with people, telling them how I see the photo and then been able to show it o them and seen their expressions are priceless. And when it comes to product photography, since I study Industrial Design, I like to capture every detail of the product when I'm taking the photo, is fun.

What are some of your favorite places in Miami to take photographs?

My favorite place to shoot in Los Angeles would be in the city. All around the city there are many places where, a grey wall with the right light would have an interesting shadow, with a subject in it will make a great backdrop for any photo.
