More about Saundi W....
What do you love about your job?
I like to make people feel things. To have feelings that may be difficult to put into words... And I love the processes. Waiting endlessly in the weeds for the right moment, the right light... Or the urgency and angst of having squeeze the shutter with immediacy and move to the next shot.... And the meticulous study involved in the editing stage. The discipline required to stick to my vision of the image in my head. This phase is quite exhilarating.
What types of shoots have you done and how did you make them special?
I've shot quite a few concerts over the years. And one band in particular still stands out in my mind- a husband-wife duo from Tel Aviv called Hank and Cupcakes. I shot they two of their shows. They have very different physical styles from each other, but it is evident in their interaction and in their performance that they are very much in love. And I was able to capture them not only as individual artists on a stage, but more importantly as one cohesive work of art. Not only in explosive musical moments, but also precious, private moments.
Awards, honors, and recognitions received
I've had a photo chosen as a Smithsonian Magazine editor’s pick, and have been a finalist in the Smithsonian Photo Competition (70 finalists chosen from a pool of more than 46,000 entrants, from 168 countries). My work has been featured in the NY Photo Festival Capture Brooklyn exhibit, the "People in the City" exhibit at Berlin Blue Gallery (Berlin), and at the Sony World Photography Exhibit (at Somerset House, London)- the World Photography Organisation selected my work from 52,323 images selected from 171 countries.
