What do you love about your job?

I spent about five years shooting lawyers and judges for a legal newspaper, and I heard “I’m the least photogenic person you’ve ever met” more times than I could count. The best part about the job was turning the camera around, showing them their photos, and seeing them smile as they said, “Hey, that’s actually not bad!” At some level, I think most non-photographers struggle with the feeling that the camera never flatters; instead, it is unkind and misrepresenting. What I enjoy most is getting a camera to produce the kinds of images my clients feel actually get to say, “Yes, that’s it!”

What types of shoots have you done and how did you make them special?

I’ve been a professional photographer for more than ten years, and, at this point, I’ve done too many shoots to count. But I know what makes each of my shoots special is the enthusiasm I communicate to my subjects/clients. Because I’m not just there to do work for them. Making great images is personally meaningful to me, and I’m extremely excited each time I make one. I don’t think people expect their photographer to be as excited about their images as they are, but I always am.

A fun fact about this photographer

I'm probably the only world champion at something you've ever met. While in high school, I won a World Pipe Band Championship with my school's bagpipe band.
