Jason is a New York based photographer who has worked with a diverse range of clients throughout the course of his career, from high school graduates to retired professional athletes to aspiring models. Jason’s passion for photography began more than 10 years ago when he began taking snapshots of people around his neighborhood — he was deeply affected by the reactions to his photos and became determined to photograph more broadly, more regularly and more intentionally. Jason is a self-taught photographer, drawing primarily on inspiration from so many photographers of yesteryear, even going to the point of making film photography and home development the foundation of his personal work.

More about Jason L....

What do you love about your job?

I am a people-first photographer. Within each person I photograph resides countless stories. Of course, I can't possibly tell all those stories, but I consider each session with someone a chapter (or perhaps, a page) in their story. They are entrusting me with certain details that I am tasked with capturing in a single image or series of images. The ability and privilege of telling a small part of someone’s story is undoubtedly a motivating factor for me but, more importantly, it is the opportunity to connect on a human level, no matter brief, with someone who was previously a total stranger.

What types of shoots have you done and how did you make them special?

I have done numerous portrait, lifestyle and environmental photo shoots that were each special in their own way. I alone don’t make them special, it is a collaborative process. I always let the people that I’m shooting with know that they are free to provide input on where we are shooting. If there is something they want to include in their shots, all they have to do is let me know. One example is a retired NBA player who has written a couple of children’s books; he asked if we could take a few shots of him with his books. I replied with an enthusiastic Yes and that really set the tone for the remainder of the shoot. No matter who it is, I try to find ways to personalize the shoot.

A fun fact about this photographer

Photography isn’t just “work” for me, I still do it for fun and I develop color and black/white film at home.
